Anbefalinger

Marianne Jelved, tidl. partileder, Det Radikale Venstre

Sunita Narain, Director, Centre for Science and Environment, New Delhi, India

I believe strongly that our parliaments needs people like Christian Friis Bach who have a global vision and have a global knowledge about the world today and the need to bring change. It is very clear that the world is interlinked and the world requires leaders who will be able forge the need for global security. But this global security is not necessarily one that is based on might, but on cooperation and working together so that we can build a common future together. I have known Christian for years and believe that he is the kind of parliamentarians who will help to protect our tomorrows. I wish him well.

Cristina Lage (2005)

Nina Schiøtz – tidl. generalsekretær for Max Havelaar Fonden i Danmark, formand for Miljømærkenævnet

Gloria M. Carrión, Founding and Board Member of the Center for Social Economy. Nicaragua

I have known Christian Friis Bach since 1998 when he was elected chairman of MS and was very much impressed by his combination of knowledge, intelligence and creativity and, at the same time, his interest for transparent debate and his capacity to listen and learn from others.  Furthermore, Christian’s combination of a brilliant mind with perhaps an even more brilliant heart is quite impressive. I believe that these qualities, together with Christian’s vision and understanding of the world today and of the growing link between the national and the international situation, make him an enviable candidate for parliament.

Helle Stenum, forkvinde for MiXeurope

Tumelo Tsikoane, Lecturer in Development Studies, National University of Lesotho

It is now over five years since I have known Christian Friis Bach. Christian was the Chairperson of the Board of Mellemfolkeligt Samvirke then. One of the things he insisted on, and has consistently continued to insist on, is that development work needs to be viewed and understood within a broader context of global issues such as the UN Conventions, World Trade Organisation, etc. In the last annual meeting of MS that I attended this dimension of his conceptualisation of issues was prominent. This time his focus was the so-called global war on global terror. I am convinced that his presence in the Danish Parliament strengthen the global dimension of the parliamentary debate. I recommend him for appointment.

John Nordbo, forfatter, formand for U-landsorganisationen IBIS

Maria Hamlin Zuniga,  Global Coordinator, International People´s Health Council

In 1998 when I first met Christian he was the chairperson of MS.  I was impressed by his youthful spirit and his profound interest in global issues. He demonstrated such a clear understanding of how to link local issues to the broader socioeconomic and political determinants of international development and how to communicate this clearly to others.  Today, in a globlized world, these skills are indispensable for parlamentarians.  The people of Denmark would benefit from having such a warm, intelligent and personable representative in the Parlament.

Mark Halle, Trade Director, IISD, Geneve

When I first met him, Christian was chairman of MS and on the Advisory Council of Danida, even though he was barely over 30.  That is a testament to Danish open-mindedness, but it is clearly also a tribute to Christian that, at an age where most of us are still inexperienced, finding our feet and seeking to be noticed, Christian already had the leadership qualities, the poise and the courage of conviction to rise to a high level in a competitive field.  Since I have learned that Christian also seeks out new challenges, and is not content to sit back and enjoy the honours and accolades that he accumulates.

What struck me most solidly on meeting Christian - aside from his charm and his easy-going personality - was the combination of a deep commitment to social justice and equity, matched with a sober understanding of what can and cannot be done economically.  It is easy to find people devoted to alleviating poverty, to improving labour standards, or to protecting the social safety net, but they tend to have dreamy and unrealistic ideas on how to organize a functional economy to support their convictions.  It is even easier to find hard-nosed economists and financial experts who will dismantle any argument that requires increasing the public purse, but dismayingly few of them are genuinely concerned with the social consequences of economic policy.  Christian is a rare specimen in this respect.  Nobody can deny his commitment to improving prospects and living conditions for the poor and downtrodden.  Yet in argument with him, he is at ease in picking apart unrealistic economic solutions.

I have learned much from my arguments with him, when he has challenged ideas that I thought were solidly embedded in good sense.  I have in particular learned that it is not necessary to buy entire ideological packages.  There is no incompatibility between a deep commitment to a sustainable future, and an equal commitment to economic good sense and efficiency.
I have watched Christian's different career moves with great interest and have felt for some time that he should venture into public service to lead by example in seeking and promoting solutions to our social and environmental problems - and to our relations to the poorer countries - that stand a chance of working in reality.

Noman Kanafani, Associate Professor

I give this guy my full recommendation. He is intelligent, industrial and always thought-provoking. But sophisticated intelligence has never been sufficient characteristic for a good politician. Sincerity, universal humanism and a sensitive sense of when the heart should have the lead are indispensable. And these are the qualities which Christian also possesses. I remember that once, when he was a young student, I supervised an essay which he wrote about the trade of coffee beans in world market. I sent him a little note then saying "thank you for giving me the lovely opportunity of learning from you more than you have learned from me". And since then he kept on surprising me and triggering my admiration for his achievements and unbounded engagements with the cases of the underprivileged. Since then I always thought that Denmark will be privileged to have a politician of his caliber, I mean a decision-maker who combines intelligence, engagement, eagerness to learn and human universal values together.
